Yesterday i had the privilige to meet with Ashley & Matt whom are getting married on June 15th, 2012. With major businesses closing their doors each week it is no surprise that wedding and mitzvah photographers, videographers and disc jockeys are dropping like flies. It is a scary time to be planning an event in South Florida so how do you protect yourself from a company going out of business and taking all your money with them?

Most important is to make sure you are dealing with a stable wedding service provider. Take the extra time to research their company.

How long have they been in business and are they incorporated? Check at http://www.sunbiz.org/corinam.html.
Are they licensed and insured? Ask for copies of their documents.
Are they behind on their taxes? Find out at https://www.broward.county-taxes.com/tcb/app/ol/licenses.
How often have they been sued? Check at http://www.browardclerk.org/clerkwebsite/bccoc2/OdysseyPA/casesearch.aspx?SelectCourt=true&DisplayCitation=no&DisplayType=Civil (make sure you click to do a partial name search to get ALL of the company's DBAs).

It may take awhile to do your leg work on a potential company but it will potentially save you hundreds to thousands of dollars and the stress of trying to find another vendor at the last minute.

Also if you are planning an event for more that 60 days away leave a very small deposit so if you do misjudge them you will lose less money! 10% should be fine with most reputable service providers. Remember, the more pressure they put you under to book and put down a large deposit, the more pressure they are under to pay their bills.

Elliot was fantastic with the arrangements and I appreciated the quick return phone calls and e-mails to my never-ending inquiries. Wayne was absolutely perfect the day of the wedding, from agreeing to start a few hours earlier to following my husband and I down the streets of Key West for the photo shoot of a lifetime - I was so lucky to find someone flexible with plans and excited to find the unexpected shots.

And also a big thank you to Kiya for answering all my production questions! The reprints and album are fantastic and I appreciated being told the expected dates and where in the process everything was. We had a great time this weekend with Kristin Barr & Matt Brown as they tied the knot on Hollywood beach and held a beautiful reception at the Marriott on Hollywood Beach in Hollywood Florida. Some of the highlights for the event were definately when the crowd gathered on the boardwalk and beach to watch the ceremony, they had a great photo booth station set up for everyone to enjoy, an awesome wedding cake/ cupcake arrangement and of course a great looking bridal party and a gorgeous bride. The day was handled flawlessly by Brooke Craig at Ultimate Event Planners, the entertainment by none other than Forte Entertianment with Elliot Valentin as the MC, Photo and Video done by the very best in business, EO studios (Bryan Hemmedinger- Photographer; Tony McLelland- Photo assistant and Walter Fransois- Videographer). Thanks to the Marriott and Barbara Lunny for all of the cooperation and Hospitality.

Wayne and Bill, Karla and I wanted to thank you and everyone at your company for such an amazing event. I know we had our ups and downs on pricing and what we could afford. My mother who helped pay off the remainder of the balance and was a little shocked at the price was your biggest fan by the end of the event. The event took place back on February 6th 2010. On Novemebr 27, 2009 I got to see what it is like from other side...

Well, of the sweetheart table that is! I (Elliot Valentin) married my best friend, Elisa Delgado (ok that sounds sappy, but it is true). It was beautiful. It met all the standards of a Fall wedding in South Florida. The temperature was perfect, everyone was in town and the bride was an hour late! You see, as an Event Professional for Elegant Occasions, I get to help brides and grooms plan their events. I go over the minor details and do my best to share my experience from other peoples weddings to make everything go smoothly, and it always does. Here's the thing, when it came to my wedding, I thought for sure we had it in the bag. We didn't worry about things too much. We planned to see each other before the ceremony to take first look pictures and take care of the formal family photos before so we can enjoy our cocktail hour with friends. However, some of the girls were late and the hairstylist started falling behind. In retrospect, all we needed was an executive decision to get the bride done on time and leave the others for last (its usually the other way around) everything would have still worked out.

So here is the moral of the story. Plan ahead; schedule the time to get together, make sure everyone knows when hair, make-up should be done and what time to be dressed. If one or two people are late, DON'T WAIT! Listen to tthe photographer when he says "It's time to get going" and don't sweat the small stuff.

After all was said and done everything was great. All of our guests had a blast and we have some really great memories. EO Studios took care of my photography and videography. E Productions handled the lighting with some subtle up lights and gobos for the ceremony and cocktail hour. In the main reception area E Productions provided programmable LED up lighting and six intelligent moving heads with lighted monograms. The Lighting Designer was able to control the lights for spot lights during speaches and change room color throughout the event (awsome effect!). Forte Entertainemnt provided a guitarist for the wedding ceremony that played our personal selections, the DJ and MC that my whole family still talks about; and the highlight of the reception was the percussionist that kept the party rockin'.

Thank you everyone at Elegant Occasions. All of you helped make my wedding a wonderful memory. And it's not because you write my paychecks. Thank you...

How to handle those late arriving wedding guests

As a event specialist here at Elegant Occasions, I get many South Florida brides who lament about the fact that many of their family are "famous" for arriving late to events. Many Dade, Broward and Palm Beach brides have this problem and therefore put the starting time in the invitations as much as an hour earlier than it really is to make sure everyone gets there on time. They admit however that their family know the time is earlier than real so mentally adjust the time to what they think is the real time and are late anyway!

Years ago a bride told me about an idea she tried and I have passed it on to many of my couples since. When listing the starting time for the ceremony make it an unusual one. For example, if you want the ceremony to start at 6:00 word the invitations to state, "ceremony to begin promptly at 5:37"!

Now here is the important part, when your family start to call (and they will!) to ask why the ceremony starts at 5:37 you must reply in a cryptic voice, "You'll see!". Curiosity will cause family members to start calling each other to find out what's going on. For this reason you should tell NO ONE why the time is as it is.

It will soon be the talk of the family and guests will come up with all kinds of crazy theories as to why the time is 5:37. Most important, you will be amazed how many of your guests are seated and ready at 5:35 just to see what is going to happen at 5:37!

Mystery is the key. Make sure NO ONE knows why you did this and it will be very successful.

Medieval Theme Wedding

I was just approached to do a Medieval theme wedding ceremony for a couple planning their second wedding in Broward county at the Parkland Golf & Country Club.

As a ceremony officiant who is both an ordained minister and a notary public I have been approached to do a vast variety of themes and traditions for ceremonies. From hand fasting and unity candles to jumping the broom and breaking the glass, there are many wonderful traditions to make your ceremony a personalized experience.

Don't settle for the same old, same old on your wedding day. Personalize! Take a good look at your family tree and get creative with your special day. Embrace your roots.

I am from a Scottish background and while my wife would not agree to Kilts, she did agree to let me wear a cummerbund and bow tie with my family's tartan (yes we actually wore cummerbunds and bow ties back then).

The afore mentioned bride and groom will be dressed in Celtic garb with the groom in kilt. They are planning to have me in medieval robes and a bagpiper to play the wedding march! We will be doing a Celtic handfasting ceremony along with other traditions. Just imagine the photography and videography we will be able to capture of this day!

One thing is for certain, if this couples family attend ten weddings this year, they will all remember the Celtic wedding best.

I wanted to take a moment to congratulate Chari & Carlton Horton on their recent destination wedding at the Fontainbleau Hotel in Miami Beach on Saturday July 11, 2009. Elegant Occasions provided a DJ and MC for their wedding ceremony, cocktail hour and reception. Everything was beautiful and went off perfectly.

Michelle Cannici from the Fontainbleau did a great job putting everything together at the hotel while the entertainment staff worked together with a photographer from the DC area coordinating everything smoothly. The ghuests had a great time and Chari & Carlton were visibly eccstatic.

Destination weddings are a great way to share a unique experience withyour closest family and friends. However, it is imperative to secure the right venue and the right destination photographer and entertainment to ensure everything goes as planned.

Owner Wayne Labush just celebrated his daughters 6th birthday. Sunday was magic, face painting, bounce house and of course one of our DJ systems playing nothing but High School Musical and Hana Montana.

Went to Las Vegas to WPPI (wedding portrait photographers international) convention. It was great seeing all the new techniques and equipment. Just could not get enough of the seminars, started at 7am and stopped at 10pm, tired, tired, tired. It was great to share information with some of our colleagues and can not wait to share the information with our entire team. Think we may even change some of our production Techniques. Nice to be back and see my wife and daughter. I'll be taking off this weekend from events but need to chaperon my daughters class to Universal Studios. Will post pictures soon.
